Social Networking Do's

Social media is so much more than a "chat room" with friends.  The reality is that those social comments if not secure by privacy checks to "only friends" could be seen by the whole world.  In an instance, where you think no one is going to care about your personal opinion about XYZ person or company, may just come back and bite you in the future.  If you are trying to pull together a new professional YOU, then it is time to sort through your social comments, tweets, and likes and remove the ones that do not fit the image you are now moving toward.

Social Networking 101

DO DEFINE: Establish a professional presence online.  Give employers insight into your background experience and skills.  List your areas of expertise.  Keep your information current and accurate.

DO GOOGLE: Search for yourself to ensure that only the correct or positive attributes about you are showing up online.  Update pictures to show a professional image, and make sure your private information is kept private by checking your account settings.  It is important to remember that once information goes online it can be easily searched and found.  Be active about monitoring how much information is available about your personal information.

DO ADD VALUE: Be an asset to the online community.  Highlight your interests in particular fields or industry trends.  If you read an interesting article online, make sure to SHARE it with your network and add your opinions.

DO MAKE CONNECTIONS: Impress potential employers by using social networking to make connections with people outside of your social circle.  Form quality online connections with previous co-workers, clients, teachers, and other professionals. (Try LinkedIn)

Social Media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter can be your golden ticket to a job, but job seekers should be weary of this double-edge sword.  Even the smallest mistake can make you fall from an ideal future employee to blacklisted candidate.
